

Leonard Arnold Lystad age 89 a longtime resident of Warren died Wednesday May 30, 2012 at the Sanctuary Abbey Nursing Center in Warren. Leonard was born October 30, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of the late Carl Lystad and the late Dolly (nee: Nilsen) Lystad. Mr. Lystad graduated from Cass Technological High School in Detroit Michigan. Following his schooling he worked as an aircraft mechanic building and repairing aircraft wings and flaps for Briggs Manufacturing Company in Detroit Michigan. When his country called for him to serve during World War II, Mr. Lystad served with the United States Army Air Corps as a navigator aboard B-24 Liberators. He attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and navigated aircraft over land and sea by dead reckoning, pilotage, radio and celestial navigation. He also inspected and tested all navigation equipment prior to take off. Mr. Lystad completed 41 combat missions, while serving in the battles of New Guinea, Luzon, Philippines, Bismarck Arch North Solomon Islands. His accolades and medals received included the Philippines Liberation Medal, 2 Overseas Bars, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with six Bronze Stars, Air Medal with 4 OLC, Unit Citation. Following Mr. Lystad's service to his country he went to work for General Motors Design Staff from January16, 1960, until his retirement in 1986 as a Draftsmen Engineer. Mr. Lystad was quite the inventor holding numerous patents for his work at General Motors. Never one to sit still Leonard taught dance at the Arthur Murray's School of Dance. Mr. Lystad was the beloved husband of Margaret (nee: Burnette) whom he married March 24, 1950. He was the dearest father of Leonard Allen (Deborah) Lystad, Cheryl Lystad (David) Smith, John Kevin Lystad. Loving grandfather of Nicholas Carl Lystad, Harmony Anne (Lystad) and Bradley Sierens, Sean Michael Lystad, and great-grandfather of Gabriel, Sabrina and Fiona Sierens. Dear brother of Carl Robert and Elsie Lystad, and Donald and Marilyn Lystad. Visitation for Mr. Lystad will be Tuesday 5-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski and Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ? Mile) in Warren. Funeral Services Wednesday beginning 11am, at the funeral home.
