Lloyd Gene Helfer, age 72 of Warren, died Sunday, September 07, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan. Lloyd was born May 23, 1936 in Paducah, Kentucky the son of the late Lula (nee: Looper) Helfer. He and his family moved to Michigan 1942 when Lloyd was a young boy. He was raised in Detroit and served his country during the Korean Conflict with the United States Army 82nd Airborne division. After his military service Lloyd worked in steel shipbuilding yards both in Michigan and California. He often told his children that he was one of the fabricators of the Edmund Fitzgerald. After working in shipbuilding Lloyd returned to Michigan to work for the automotive companies. He worked for Ford, and Chrysler, but never liked the cold Michigan winters. He often moved his family and took new jobs to be in warm weather states; however his wife missing her family in Michigan would eventually get Lloyd to return to her home state. When Lloyd was not working he loved warm weather, and visiting the mountains of Tennessee where he could golf, fish, boat, and just spending time enjoying the outdoors. Lloyd was predeceased by his dear wife Lielani Helfer 12 years prior. Mr. Helfer is survived by his children Teri Lynn Helfer, Shari (Frank) Satka, Mindi (Dan) OConnell, Lloyd (Stacey) Helfer, and Marni (Anthony) Burnside. He is the dear brother of Jerry (Wanda), Lee (Carol) Glynn (Pam), Norman (Sandy) Helfer, and Sandra Samu. Mr. Helfer is the loving grandfather of Anthony, Taylor, Jake, Jason, Rachelle, Amber, Cameron, Connor, Cole, Caven, Jacci, and Jerry. He is also survived by his uncle J.D. (Stella) Looper, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. A Memorial Service in Mr. Helfers memory will be held Friday September 12th, 2008, 6:00 pm at Warren Woods Baptist Church, 14251 E.
