Margaret Louise Harris, age 86 of Harrison Township, died Sunday, September 28, 2014 at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. She was born April 12, 1928 in Dalton, Georgia, daughter of the late William and the late Elizabeth (nee: Suiter) McDonald. It's been said,…"Life is about the dash." When thinking about that familiar symbol on a headstone between the date of birth and date of death, the dash represents all the moments and memories that have filled the life of the one that has passed. For Margaret, the lion share of that dash includes the life she shared with her Gallant Groom, Jack. Married on May 9, 1952, Margaret & Jack were blessed to enjoy over 62 years together,…building a home, raising a family, and growing deeper in love with each passing day. But the "path towards love" didn't quite start out all that rosy. You see,…as teens, Margaret was the older of the two and, obviously, obtained her driver's license first. Having met through friends, Jack wasn't really her cup of tea,…and frankly, she found him to be a bit of a smart alec. But Margaret played along and would eventually warm up to him,…and he to her, especially since she was the one who could drive. But the most important drive the two of them would come to experience was the day that Cupid drove her "arrow of love" into their hearts and a new journey was begun. That journey found Margaret becoming a devoted wife to her beloved Jack,…as well as a loving mother and grandmother to the cherubs God brought into her life. And not merely with family, but with friends too, Margaret will always be remembered for the loving care-giver she was to all, and the many ways she nurtured the love that had been placed in her path. And though caring as she did was steeped with a lot of the "Southern" roots in which she was raised, Margaret had a special way about her that transcended the traditions of the south. Yet without question, she was truly a "Southern Belle" and carried herself with a poise that denoted both class and style. When asking her family if there was an outstanding or notable trait that could be shared, their voices resounded both in fervor and unison with the word "Clean!" Margaret took much pride in her house, and keeping it clean was top priority on her daily "to-do list." The key word there being "Daily." Every day…every room…she kept a house fit for royalty. She was like a housekeeper on steroids, and the end result never ceased to leave you in awe. "Molly Maid" had nothin' on this lady! And being from the south, another of Margaret's notable high points was realized through her culinary prowess. She could work some incredible magic in the kitchen, especially when it came to anything "fried." Of course, one cannot be considered a true southern cook unless they know how to fry up a mess-o-chicken,…and Margaret had that down to a science, and an art. Her daughter recounted the wonderful memory of the days she'd be walking home from school and catch a whiff of Mom's fried chicken,…immediately become elated,…and this was when she was still a few doors down from home. And NOBODY could do "biscuits & gravy" like Margaret,…just ask her eldest, Michael. Not that he's biased, it's simply fact! Her gravy could make your toes curl with delight. If you left Margaret's table hungry, it was your own fault. The care of a 62 year relationship,…the joys and challenges of raising a family,…the loving efforts of making a house a "home,"…it was all part of what made Margaret tick. And none of it would have been as special and treasured as it was if not for her deep & abiding faith in God. It's not only what got her through the storms of life, it was the joy & strength she exuded along the way. You can't have a rainbow without a storm, and Margaret was truly the rainbow in so many people's lives. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Margaret leaves a legacy of love that will forever be revered, honored, and held close with each reflection shared. She will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Margaret was the beloved wife of Jack. Dearest mother of Michael (Del) Harris, Theresa (Scott) Whibley, and Kathy (Darryl) Dettloff.
