“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
A TIME TO BE BORN: MELVIN GLOVER JR. was the eldest of four children born to Melvin and
Rebecca Glover on March 4, 1944, in Selma, Alabama.
A TIME TO PLANT: Melvin attended the public schools of Detroit, Michigan. He accepted Jesus
Christ as his personal savior, joined Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the late Pastor
John Mack, Sr., where he served his church faithfully, until his health began to decline.
A TIME TO SERVE: Melvin served his country in the United States Army. He earned the designation
of marksman and worked as a medic. After serving the required time, he returned home and began his
employment with Ford Motor Co., where he faithfully worked for over 30 years.
A TIME TO LOVE: Melvin married LaRita Leonard on October 4, 1974 and accepted her two
daughters Kimberly and Dawn as his own. Three years later they welcomed their only child Stephanie.
This union lasted 26 years until LaRita went home to be with the Lord. Melvin was blessed to find love
again and married Betty Jean Simpson in July of 2003.
A TIME TO PLAY: Melvin was an avid reader. He would spend hours in Barnes and Noble on any
given Saturday. He was never without a book. If he was not reading a book, he was doing a crossword
puzzle. His favorite sport was baseball. From his days as a youngster watching Al Kaline at Tiger
Stadium to his time as a season ticket holder at both Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park. It was not
surprising to catch him reading a book while a ballgame was on the tv.
A TIME TO DIE: Melvin fought a good fight. He kept the faith and finished his course. He realized that
man has an appointed time to die, and he knew that death is the golden key that opens the door to eternity.
So, he took his Heavenly Flight on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Preceding him in death were his parents
and three of his siblings: Clarence Jerome Glover, Barbara Jean Glover and Horace Robinson.
A TIME TO MOURN: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5)
Left to mourn and cherish his memory are his wife Betty Glover; daughters Stephanie (Troy) Walker,
Kimberly Leonard and Dawn Colson (Andre); grandsons DeShaun Leonard and Evan Walker; siblings
Sylvester Glover, Dorothy (Donald) Harper, Anderson (Patricia) Robinson, Robert (Theresa) Robinson,
Carl Robinson, Christina (Ronald) Lewis, Donald (Zelda) Robinson and Gloria Robinson; Brother-in-law
Ricky (Jan) Hurst, Sister-in-law Thelma (Donald) Daniels and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends.
“If you can’t be good, be careful.” Melvin
