Michael Edward Michels, age 57 of Warren, died Friday, September 4, 2015 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born May 28, 1958 in Detroit, son of Roy and Carolyn (nee: Lundberg) Michels.Working as a C & C Operator for Suburban Boring, Mike learned and excelled in a profession where his skills and talents were highly sought after, and a job that he dedicated the best parts of his work ethics toward its completion. Along with the technical aspects he exuded, the story of the flip side definitely needs to acknowledge Mike's loyal service to the company,…having held the only job he knew since the young age of 19. That makes for 38 years from this young 57 year old man.Of course, working amidst all that machinery for 38 years, Mike became quite the appreciator of tools. Not merely the tools that he knew on a daily basis, but tools in general. His affinity grew considerably over the years, as did his impressive tool collection of which he was most proud. And putting those tools to work, Mike had taken on the project of restoring a 1966 Chevelle motor, a little hobby he was enjoying with the help of his son. It was a great Father & Son experience that meant the world to him. And the project was a bit poignant as it harkened back to the '66 Chevelle that Mike owned in his younger years,…that unfortunately got stolen. When it came to motors and fun-on-wheels, Mike was also quite fond of his motorcycle and the pleasure of hitting the open road with his hair blowin' in the wind.Another memorable joy in Mike's life were the times he spent up in Cheboygan. For all the buildings, traffic and commotion of city life, his escapes up north provided the perfect balance that helped to refresh his soul. And though it wasn't the only venue for a warm & inviting campfire, it was certainly a special location for the enjoyment he shared with family and friends alike. There's nothing quite as memorable as sitting around a roaring fire,…a favorite drink in hand,…and sharing the great stories and conversations that often accompany the moment. And Mike just couldn't get enough! As for a little television entertainment, Mike definitely had his favorites. Like many men, the old westerns provided an ample portion of machismo to keep his interest. And when it came to "Shark Week," there was nothing else on TV to watch. He was glued to the little fishies. Many will also recall what a great cook he was and how he loved to see people enjoying a plate of his food. They will also reflect on his caring nature and how he always made sure that everyone had fixed a plate and were eating first. It's just the kind of guy everyone knew him to be.From his softer side, Mike was known for being quite the dancer. When it came to cutting-a-rug, Mike could hang with the best of them and always looked smooth as silk. Yet without a doubt, his softer side also opened his heart to the most special gifts in life,…his family. Spending time with his loved ones never ceased to fill his heart with joy,…especially when he was with his precious grandson, Jordan. He was the best Grandpa, and Jordan had a way of stealing Mike's heart in a most special way. The "other" family whose lives were changed by Mike were the many friends of his children that passed through his life. Mike was always there with a listening ear and helpful advice, and was often looked upon as the "miracle problem solver." Every neighborhood seems to have that one parent that every kid adopts,…and Mike was that guy!A loving father, grandfather and friend, Mike leaves us far too soon, but leaves a legacy of love that will forever be cherished and embraced with each reflection shared. He was always giving,…always kept in touch,…and his faithfulness will never be forgotten. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.Michael was the beloved father of Melissa (Jason) Symons, William Michels, Samantha (Andrew Pikunas) Michels, and former husband of Sandra Birmingham and loving grandfather of Jordan Pikunas. Dearest brother of Elizabeth O'Dell, Dorothy Zimmerman, Kevin (Sue Aubrey) Michels, and Nicholas (Barbara) Michels. Cherished uncle of John, Sherry, Michelle, Eric, Stacy, Nicholas, Sophia, Mike, and John. Brother-in-law of Carri Gross.Visitation will take place on Friday 3 - 9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. Please share memories of Michael at his memory book above.
