

Rita Jean Cerankowski age 88 died March 12, 2018 at St. John Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. Rita was born February 2, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of the late John Swoboda and the late Hedwig (nee: Majewski) Swoboda. The extraordinary life and personality that is Rita Jean Cerankowski came to rest on March 12, 2018. Devoted wife of the late Eugene Cerankowski, loving mother to Marc, Paul and Laura (Dan) Hejza, and adoring Babcia to Brandon and Katelyn Hejza. A proud graduate of Pershing High School the graduating class of 1947 and Wayne State University 1951, she lived within 2 blocks her entire 88 years. She was a strong supporter of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish, Detroit, since her wedding in 1958, where she was active with Moms and Dads Club, strengthened her bold Soprano voice in the church choir with husband Eugene, and served on Parish Council for many years. Since the recent joining of Our Lady Queen of Heaven-Good Shepherd Church she has been given the title of a church matriarch and enjoyed the weekly Senior Card group. Her most celebrated accomplishment was her involvement with Polish Roman Catholic Union of America (PRCUA) Halka Dancers of Detroit, since it's inception in 1969. She was President from 1970-1980 and then Director from 1981 till 2015. She was an Officer of the PRCUA Women's Division of Michigan 1988-present and Co-Chairman to the PRCUA Shirley A. Galanty Michigan State Ball for 25 years. A true Detroiter, she was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings attending many games and always listened at home on the radio. She took advantage of all that Detroit had to offer, faithfully visiting Belle Isle Conservatory and nearly every Rockin' On the Riverfront concert. Her most recent memorable events were attending the Beatification of St. Solanus Casey, attending her grandson's graduation from her Alma mater Wayne State and seeing Misty Copeland perform at the Opera House.Visitation Friday 3-9pm with a 7pm Scripture Service at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Rd. at Common (12 1/2 Mile). Rita will lie in state Saturday 10am at Our Lady Queen of Heaven-Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8200 Rolyat St. in Detroit, until the time of the Funeral Mass 10:30am.
