Susan was a woman of FAITH, first and foremost. Her relationship with God was strong, and she found peace and comfort knowing that “all things are possible with God.” Susan’s strong faith came from attending St. Paul’s Church of Highland Park. Little Suzie dressed up in her Sunday best and attended church alone, joining the Junior Choir and singing her heart out to the Lord. Susan described these moments as the happiest times of her childhood and the reason her faith was so strong. Susan and her brother Donald were raised in Highland Park by their mother, Veronica, who worked multiple jobs just to keep food on the table. Susan idolized her two older brothers, George and Timothy, and cherished her time with them. Susan was very proud of the fact that her father was a Highland Park police officer, and she supported law enforcement her entire life. Susan attended Highland Park High School and found joy as a Candy Striper at a local hospital. Susan enrolled in community college with thoughts of becoming a nurse but met the love of her life and got married at the tender age of 20 years old, starting a family of her own shortly thereafter. Susan called herself a “domestic engineer,” devoting her life to raising her children and taking care of her family. By the age of 25, Susan had 3 children under the age of 4 to keep her busy. Her baby was born 6 years later, completing the family.
Susan’s heart knew no boundaries; she loved unconditionally and unapologetically. Susan befriended everyone she met, from gas station clerks to telemarketers, and would give a stranger the shirt off her back without hesitation. Susan had a special gift of always knowing just the right words to say to comfort anyone in pain, even those she literally just met. She loved all of God’s creatures and enjoyed spending time on her back porch watching the animals eat whatever goodies she laid out for them. Susan served for several years as a volunteer usher at the Fox Theater, happily singing along with performers from the sidelines. Susan taught Sunday School at St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Church when her children were little, sharing God’s love in a way only she could do.
Susan’s three grandchildren were the light of her life. Her first grandchild was born premature, and Susan spent two and a half months holding him, singing to him, and praying over him. She took up almost permanent residence in the NICU, bonding with him in ways that only she could. Susan did not want to be called “Grandma,” and was honored to be given the name “Umna” by her first grandchild, a name that is as unique as she was. Susan had a special bond with each of her grandchildren, and she cherished every hug, snuggle, and kiss. Susan ended every visit with her grandchildren with a “Hearts and Heads” ritual, making certain they know that Umna loves them “with all my heart and all my mind.” Susan enjoyed spending Sunday “Tiki” nights with her family, laughing, eating, playing games. She enjoyed late night card games with her older grandchildren, and movies with snuggles and songs with her youngest grandchild.
Susan is survived by her husband of 51 years, Zdravko Dobrasevic; her children, Donna (Rod) Webb, Stevan Dobrasevic, Nikola Dobrasevic, and Debra (Marc) Janicki; her grandchildren, Jonnathon Webb, Victorija Webb, and Grace Janicki; her brother, Donald Weston; her sister-in-law, Nada Dobrasevic, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Susan was preceded in death by her mother Veronica Kaplun Weston; her father Donald Weston; her brothers, George Weston and Timothy Weston; her in-laws Ratko and Vida Dobrasevic; her brother-in-law Rajko Dobrasevic; her nephew Ratko Dobrasevic; her great nephew, Jackson Gann; and her great niece, Amanda Dobrasevic.
