

The Honorable Ted Bates, age 84 of Roscommon and formerly of Warren having served as the Mayor of Warren, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City Michigan. Ted was born September 30, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan the son of the late James E. Bates and the late Nina (nee: Brown) Bates. Ted Bates served the citizens of Warren as their Mayor for over 14 years in office. Mayor Bates has the longest tenure of any of the eight mayors since Warrens inception in 1957 converted from a village to a city form of government. Ted also served in the Navy during World War II having attained the rank of Seaman 1st Class. Mayor Ted Bates was a straightforward man who ran the city of Warren with an iron fist. He felt that he was responsible to the citizens and the city he loved. Mayor Bates always wanted to be kept abreast of any issue that came to rise regardless of day or night. However, Ted Bates was also a generous and caring man who embodied quite of sense of humor and sophistication. He was a no frills man who enjoyed cooking, baking, and watching the deer from his northern Michigan home. Ted cherished the friendships he made along the way and always loved chatting with anyone who would call. Even while Ted was hospitalized he asked his wife to put a sign on the door inviting anyone in to chat. Ted was the beloved husband of Mary Jacqualine Jackie Bates, and the dear father of Barbara (Rick) Nelson, Ted (Susan) Bates, Laurie (Ron) Fair, Cathleen (Raymond) Porter, and the late Jamie Bates (Patrick Callahan), also Kimberly Birr, and Ronald Rocho. Loving grandfather of David, Marc, Casey, Stephanie, Lauren, Ryan, Timothy, Alyssa, Raymond Jr., and Samantha. Visitation for Mr. Bates will be Friday from 3-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Road) in Warren. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday 12 Noon at the Funeral Home. Officiating the Funeral will be Rev.
