Our hearts are deeply saddened dear Ted, our most cherished friend and neighbor. A Man of deep conviction and a very kind and generous and giving heart. He demanded much but always gave back two fold. I will miss our twice daily phone calls and light hearted banter, but will always remember you as my very closest and dearest of friends. May God hold you in his arms and bless you for eternity and give comfort to our dear Jackie, who took such great care of your every need. Sleep well our dear friend you deserve a blissful rest. We shall think of you often and miss your presence beyond words, but we will always love you as a very close and dear friend. Goodbye dear friend, and may God give you the confort which you so richly deserve.

Our sympathies go out to Cathy and the rest of the Bates family. Cathy had been been a huge positive impact in our lives. We are sure her Dad has been, is, and will forever be proud of her.

Your untiring care of him was inspirational to say the least, and a model for every caring spouse. Our prayers and condolences go out to your entire family. It was a pleasure knowing you and working at City Hall during your time there. Still have a few of those "Bates" bags that have held up through the years. God Bless You and say hello to all your buddies up there where we will someday all meet again.

My father, Charles L. Groesbeck, served as Police Commissioner under Mr. Bates. On behalf of he and my mother, and the entire Groesbeck family, I extend our condolences. Personally, I have fond memories of working on Mr. Bates re-election campaigns. He will always remain a legendary figure in Warren and Macomb County politics.

Now Mayor Bates and my Mom Pat Galvin are reunited in Heaven. She'll be running some kind of campaign for him I'm sure. Hearts go out to the family in their time of grief.

Dear Bates children: These are hard days, we know.. I have a few thoughts, from Studebaker. It was halloween,your dad walked in our front door with a mask over this head, it scared my mother,she was screaming, NELSON. your dad removed it and they laughed. I was a Teen for Ted. That was where I learned Volenteering and have done alot of it as my parents and yours have. I remember when you, Ted, came to Washinton D.C.as you entered the F.B.I. I made you and your dad dinner. (what it must have been like, a 20 year old cooking.) After dinner Ron drove, you followed, down to where you need to go in D.C. You and your dad couldn't believe there were no red lights. Here in D.C. at that time the lights were in corners under trees. and you missed them. One Last memory is when you and Susan married. Everyone went on a bus and my parents joined your folks and had so much fun. You all must have so many memories. Enjoy,I'm sure you have many. Our thoughts are with you. Nancy Cole (Llewellyn)

We are sincerely sorry for your loss. We worked with and for Ted for over 20 years and appreciated his friendship. From the conception of the City of Warren, his leadership as Treasurer and Mayor was a great value to us all.

I will always treasure my long-time friendship with Ted. He was kind, thoughtful,generous, loyal and a genuinely fine human being. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. The Bates family, please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your husband and father. I enjoyed his presence as a youth in Warren and was very glad to see him enjoy retirement in the great north. Recently, I found some "Bates" bags that brought back some great memories, walking door to door, working the polls and stuffing envelopes so many years ago. Thank you Mr. Mayor for teaching me about working hard. I'll never forget serving you lunch at the GM dinning room. My deepest sympathy to the family for he will be missed.

My condolences to the Bates family. As a young child growing up in the 8 mile and Hoover area of Warren I remember the Bates name fondly. Ted was a true public servant, and Warren is a better place because of his service. Your family will be in my prayers.

Dear Jackie and Family, Mr. Bates was a part of our family's lives for my entire lifetime. He was a remarkable friend to my father. We still have some of the "Bates bags" that he used to give our during elections :) Ted will be remembered with love and fondness.

Truly sorry to hear of you loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you move through this time of grief.

Our deepest sympathies to the Bates family, especially my oldest friend, Laurie. Your dad was so good to my family and I, and he is in my most cherished childhood memories. He was the one to teach me how to ride my first two wheeler. We had many good times back on Studebaker, and more good times after. The bus ride for Teddy's wedding, priceless. Our love to you all.
