Athanasios (Athan) Theodosios Margas completed his earthly life on May 25, 2019, at home in Potomac, Maryland, surrounded by his loving family. Having enjoyed a wonderful weekend with his family, Athanasios reposed in the Lord, while asleep, at age 90. He is survived by the family he loved so dearly, Vasiliki, his devoted wife of 65 years, his sons, Theodosios and Nikolaos, their spouses, Konstadina and Eleni, respectively, his four grandchildren, Vassiliki, Penelope, Theodosios and Christos, his siblings, Katerina and Panayiotis, and his nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Theodosios and Eleni Margaritopoulos and his brothers Nikolaos and Ioannis.
Athanasios was born in Megalo Horio, Evritania, Greece, on November 1st, 1928. Raised through devastating war and famine, Athanasios developed a quiet strength and unwavering determination to forge a better life for himself and his family in America. He began to realize his dream in the mid 1950’s when he and Vasiliki immigrated to the United States, and started to sponsor relatives and friends to ensure their opportunities as well. Living first in Greenville, North Carolina, the Margas family moved, in 1965, to Washington D.C. where Athanasios, drawing on his training and experience in French cuisine, became a renowned Chef and respected restaurateur.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2815 36th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007. The visitation will be held from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, on Friday, May 31, 2019, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am. Prayers and interment will follow at St. Paul’s Rock Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made in Athanasios’ memory to the Narthex Fund of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2815 36th street & Mass ave NW Washington, D.C. 20007 and/or the Iconography Fund at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 701 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD 20905.
Although we will miss our father and papou in this life, the memory of his steadfast love, kindness, and wisdom will strengthen us always.
May his memory be eternal!
