Charles L. Schultze

Of Washington, DC died on September 27, 2016 at the age of 91. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Rita Hertzog Schultze. He is survived by his six children, Karen Hoffman, Kevin Schultze (Carmen Martin), Lynn Jones (Kevin Jones), Kathleen Schultze (Bob Wiley), Carol Kasunic (Rob Kasunic) and Mary Chris Weintrob (Elliot Weintrob); 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as his brother, Bill Schultze. Charlie, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, graduated from Gonzaga High School. He enlisted in the army during WWII and served for three years in the infantry. He was awarded both a purple heart and a bronze star. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from Georgetown University. He was awarded a Ph.D in economics from the University of Maryland in 1960. During his illustrious career as an economist, Charlie was the Assistant Director of the Bureau of the Budget under President Kennedy. He was subsequently appointed Director of the Bureau of the Budget in 1965 and served as Director under President Johnson until 1968. President Carter appointed him Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors in 1976. He was president of The American Economics Association in 1984. Charlie was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution for over 42 years. He authored/co-authored numerous books and publications on economics and public policy while at Brookings. He was a regular commentator on PBS' Nightly Business Report for many years. Charlie and his wife Rita traveled extensively both here in the U.S. and abroad. He was an avid gardener and Redskins fan. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Best Buddies (bestbuddies.org). There will be a Memorial Service for family, friends, and colleagues at the Brookings Institution at 1775 Massachusetts Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20036 on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 2 p.m. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
