Dott was born in Washington, DC and raised in Bethesda, MD. She married Richard S. Varney, a Naval Academy graduate and Marine Corps officer, and accompanied him during extensive assignments around the country as well as in Indonesia. During her working years, she was engaged in special security for both government agencies and private industry.
Dott was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Chevy Chase. She had been a teacher in their religious education program and, for many years, was a volunteer at the church soup kitchen.
In addition to raising four children of her own, in retirement Dott devoted 13 years to the daily care of her two youngest granddaughters. She volunteered countless hours to the girls, their schools, and their extracurricular activities.
Dott enjoyed travel, especially in Asia and in Ireland, where she connected with several distant cousins with whom she maintained contact.
Dott is survived by her husband, Richard S. Varney; son, Brian Varney (and wife, Paula), son, Steven Varney (and wife, Anju), daughter, Lynne Varney (and husband, Joseph), daughter, Karen Varney (and husband, Brian), and six grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to "Blessed Sacrament Soup Kitchen" at 3630 Quesada St. NW, Washington, DC 20015.
