Edda Maria Sevilla Somoza, 73 years of age, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 29, 2022. Edda was a lifelong resident of the Washington, DC area and shared a home in Bethesda, MD with her sister, Lorena.
Edda was born February 27, 1948 in Washington, DC to the late Ambassador Guillermo Sevilla-Sacasa and Mrs. Lillian Somoza de Sevilla-Sacasa. Edda attended Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart.
Edda was the favorite sister of her siblings and the favorite aunt of her many nieces and nephews. Her numerous godchildren considered Edda a second mother; she never forgot a birthday or milestone event. Her love and vocation for children was fulfilled as a Montessori teacher for over three decades.
One of Edda’s fondest memories was when she was crowned Queen of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, VA in 1973. Edda shared that same honor with her mother who was crowned in 1940, and with Kiara her niece, crowned in 2017.
For many years she volunteered with the Future of Nicaragua Foundation’s medical and dental missions (Smiles for the Future) as an interpreter and facilitator. These missions provided medical care to hundreds of children and their families, giving them a better chance at life.
Edda was sister to eight siblings: Guillermo, Lillian, Luis (deceased), Julia, Lorena, Eduardo, Alejandro, and Bernardo.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at the Church of the Little Flower, 5607 Massachusetts Ave., Bethesda, MD 20816 at 10:30am.
A celebration of Edda’s life will follow at Joseph Gawler’s Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20016 at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation to Edda’s favorite charity: Future of Nicaragua Foundation, 5301 Westbard Circle #339, Bethesda, MD 20816
