GEORGE JOHN KATINAS Peacefully passed away at the age of 93 on November 14, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 13, 1921 in New York City. His parents, John George and Dialecti Katinas, emigrated from Naxos, Greece and had arrived on Ellis Island earlier that year. Shortly after George's birth, the family moved to Washington, DC, where his five sisters were born. In his early years, George worked at his father's fruit and produce stand before and after school. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1940. In 1942, he enlisted in the army and served during World War II as a Corporal stationed in North Africa, Italy and Greece. In 1945, due to his father's illness, George received an honorable discharge and returned home to help support his family and take over the family business. In 1948, he purchased the Paramount Restaurant on 17th Street NW. That same year, he met his future wife, Yvette Corriveau, who had moved to Washington to serve in the home front effort during the war. The Paramount later became Annie's Paramount Steak House, named for George's younger sister. George would go on to open two other successful restaurants in Washington during his long and active career. Annie's remains a fixture of the DuPont Circle neighborhood to this day. George and Yvette settled in the Bannockburn community of Bethesda, MD where they spent many happy years. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and boating throughout his life. He and Yvette especially loved spending time with their children and grandchildren at their summer home in Ocean City, MD. An all-around athlete and dedicated golfer, George always strove to better his game and could be found yearround at local parks chipping balls alongside his beloved German Shepherd, Zorba, and later with his Chihuahua, Oliver. George is survived by his children, Diane (Jon) Burnes, Lisa (Don) Lindler, John G. (Mary Catherine) Katinas, Paul G. (Carole) Katinas, and Marianne Katinas; his grandchildren, Kevin (Dawn) Burnes and Kerry (Bob) Murphy, Paul Joseph and Yvette Lindler, Mary Elizabeth, George and Christopher Katinas, Georgia, Juliana, Phillip and John Henry Katinas, and Sam, John Paul, George and Benjamin Wilson; and his great-grandchildren: Nikka Campbell, and Hanna and Caleb Murphy. He is survived also by his two sisters, Catherine Canard and Mary Stephanos, and brother Mike Katinas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Yvette, and by his three sisters, Sue Stouts, Sophia Nicholson and Annie Kaylor. George's devotion to his family will be his lasting legacy. The family extends their deepest appreciation to the many wonderful people that cared for George in the last year of his long life. On Wednesday, November 19, there will be visitations from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington,DC.
