Herb was a loving father and brother. He was also a friend to many with whom he worked at Case Design and Remodeling, where he was a bathroom designer and sales representative for 11 years.
His sales style was straightforward; closing deals was simple. Herb was known for asking potential clients: "So, are you going to hire me or what?"
It often worked.
Herb wasn't just skilled at one-liners. He was a trusted colleague at Case and was known to inspire those around him. It was no coincidence that many of his new, close friends were from Case.
Herb well knew the value of old friendships, too.
He graduated from Walt Whitman High School and continued his studies at Boston University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. He embraced people open-mindedly and made friends who would last a lifetime.
Herb might have been a big man on campus, but he would be the baby in the Stanwood family when he was born on October 19th, 1948, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. His father, Herbert A. Stanwood, Jr., was an accountant with the Army Corps of Engineers. His mother, Helen Stanwood, stayed at home to take care of Herb and his older sister, Thora.
The family moved to Northern Virginia in 1949, and then to Bethesda in 1959.
Herb married Gina Croci in 1975 and the couple had one daughter, Janine. She was his joy. He was hers. Herb taught his daughter the joys of simple pleasures like cooking, shopping at hardware stores, and swimming. He also inspired her to see the light in dark situations, and to think freely and with goodwill.
Herb died peacefully at home and is survived by his daughter Janine Froelich of Miami Beach, Florida and sister Thora Stanwood of Arlington, Virginia.
