Age 85, Irene Pappas of Bethesda, MD, died peacefully on October 30, 2014. Irene was born on June 22, 1929 in Washington, DC to the late Demetra and Peter Maggos, both immigrants from Greece. A devoted wife and mother, her greatest joy - besides shopping - was being with the family. Her weekly poolside parties with family were special. Showing true Greek hospitality, no visitor ever left her home hungry. She was a decades-long supporter of the Washington NFL football team. And she was the life of any party. A vivacious redhead, she was an incredibly lucky poker player and an exceptional dancer, dancing the night away at parties as well as jitterbugging to "The Jingle Bell Rock" each Christmas. Predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, George, her beloved firstborn son, Peter George, her brother, George Maggos, and her older sister, Marie Drogaris. She is survived by her daughter, Bette Jane, and her husband, Jim Burks; her son, Phillip and wife, Debbie, daughter-in-law, Jeannie; and step-grandchildren, Shawn Mary and Aaron, her sister, Athena Gikas, her goddaughter, Mary Ann Jobe, as well as nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to call at JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS, LLC, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW (corner of Harrison St.), Washington, DC, on Sunday, November 2 from 3 to 6 p.m. Trisagion service at 5 p.m. Funeral service will be at The Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, 7701 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda, MD on Monday, November 3 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD. Irene was known for her generosity. In lieu of flowers, to honor her legacy, please be generous to a charity of your choice.
