On February 18, 2015, Jim Bugg of Chevy Chase, MD passed away, beloved husband of Carol Donayre Bugg; devoted father of Karen Mills (Dr. Chip), Ken Bugg, Darlene Bugg, Jim Bugg, Jr. (Deirdre), Whitney Williams (John); brother of Bennie Bugg (Doris), Sylvia Blair (Gus); grandfather of James Joseph Kirlin, III, James Brady Williams, Morgan Donayre Williams and McKenzie Fitzgerald Bugg.
Jim was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 10, 1926 to Vernon and Martha Bugg. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Betty, Bill, Lynn and Tom Bugg.
During the Great Depression, Jim was raised in Kentucky on a dirt-scrabble farm. At the age of 14, he ran off to Idaho where he lied about his age in order to join the CCC's. Following his service in the Army during World War II and college at the University of Toledo, Jim began his sales career selling Kirby Vacuum cleaners door to door. His franchise experience started in 1970 where he guided the opening of 325 franchises with Century 21. As Chairman of the Board and past president of Decorating Den Interiors, Jim led the company into North America's leading in-home decorating service and interior design franchise. He was the recipient of the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award in 1991 from Merrill Lynch, Price Waterhouse and INC Magazine. In 1994, Jim was named Chairman of the International Franchise Association (IFA) and inducted in 2009 to the IFA's Franchise Hall of Fame. He was recognized as one of the Washingtonians of the Year in 2007. A born organizer, Jim either founded or co-founded the following organizations: African Safari Club of Washington, African Wildlife Foundation, Chesapeake Heritage Foundation, Grand National Waterfowl Association, Take A Kid Outdoors (TAKO) and the Yellow Ribbon Fund.
Jim was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing at his hunting property, Poverty Point, in Dorchester County. He also loved golfing and socializing with his friends at Columbia Country Club. Jim was a gifted artist, writer and conservationist as well. His positive attitude was infectious to all who knew him. The combination of his lean years growing up in Kentucky, his luck of surviving World War II, and the struggles of his first attempts at door to door selling fostered Jim's resolve to not take life for granted but to approach it with a determined positive attitude. Jim's special influence will continue to have a profound impact on countless lives.
A service will be held at Chevy Chase United Methodist Church, 7001 Connecticut Ave., Chevy Chase, MD 20185, Friday, March 6, 2015 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Yellow Ribbon Fund, 4905 DelRay Ave., Suite 500, Bethesda, MD 20814, www.yellowribbonfund.org.
