I met Jim in 1991 when he was assigned the USSS advance detail assigned to President Bush Sr. visit to Boise,Idaho. I was on the Boise police swat team and I spent the entire week with Jim securing and pre checking the locations the president would visit. It was a very educational experience and Jim shared all his knowledge with me. Jim had forgot his running shoes and he borrowed a pair from me so he could stay fit exercising. During the visit he allowed me to post in front of the podium during POTUS speech and assist in escorting Pres. Bush to the presidential vehicle at the end of the president’s speech. That next Christmas I received a phone call from Jim. He called from the USSS station at the White House and invited my family back for a White House tour/visit. I will always remember Jim as a professional intelligent giving and caring friend. Such a great loss to his family friends and our country.Rest in piece my friend.

I e-mailed back and forth with Jim probably in 2023? 

I learned of his brave battle with Parkinson's. I knew Jim from his time in the USSS in Vancouver BC. Jim was incredible, friendly and a credit. He was extremely proud of his Mother’s Irish ancestry. May he rest in peace.

Even though my words come more than one year after Mr. Tomsheck's death because I only learned yesterday of his passing, these words still hold true.  I knew Mr. Tomsheck when he was the United States Secret Service attaché in Vancouver, Canada in the late 1990s.  I specifically knew him from the intel meetings at the Peace Arch Border Crossing in Blaine, WA, where I worked as a USDA-PPQ agriculture officer.  I was our office representative at these meetings.  Mr. Tomsheck always attended these meetings well dressed and exhibiting a professional demeanor.  I could never forget his response when I asked him how life is going for him.  He always responded, "Excellent"!  He always had a positive attitude, and respectful of everyone.  Even though life could not possibly always be "Excellent", he nonetheless would no doubt try to make the best possible outcomes of any situation.  I always admired him and felt honored to know him.  This world would be a better place with more people like him.

I first met James in Vancouver in 1997. I had moved from HK to Seattle courtesy of the SS.  I developed a good relationship with him since then.  Today I remembered him and when I googled his name saw the notice. 
None of the family knew me unless he mentioned my name. Please accept my deepest sympathies.  James was a very honest and straightforward person. May his would RIP.

To the Tomsheck Family and Friends,

My deepest condolences and sympathy to you.  I could go on and on about the Mr. Tomsheck.  He was truly an inspiration to us all.   I remember when I loss my dad suddenly in 2007, he gave me the support I needed to get through the difficult time and he came to the service to support me and my family..  I also remember he was an huge Green Bay Packers  fan.  Our Chief of Staff, Janine Carrido, Christine Wells and myself brought tee shirts and surprised him wearing them.  His smile was priceless.  I feel blessed to have been a part of the IA family under his leadership and forever grateful to have had him as a supervisor, mentor and friend.

Jimmy and I are first cousins and grew up as family friends and neighbors both attending Saint John’s Omaha Parish and Grade School.Jimmy was two years younger than myself and we both accredited our experiences at Saint John’s as being very formulative in shaping our lives. We spent about an hour talking by long distance phone call the day before he died, reminiscing about our childhood experiences. I am so grateful for that conversation. 
The loss of James Tomscheck is shocking and Jimmy will be missed by many.

Jim was my uncle.  He was about 16 year younger than my mother, so in our youth he was like my biggest big brother.  We would see him occasionally when he came from Omaha to Woodbine to visit.  My two brothers and I were maybe 4, 6 and 7 years old, but here was Jim this 16 year old bundle of energy.  My older brothers love to tell the story of us horsing around upstairs in our bedroom and uncle Jim flying through the air and landing on the bed, and literally breaking the bedframe.

Jim became more disciplined as he got older, and made his way into law enforcement in Omaha, eventually into his distinguished career with the Federal Government.  As an adult I idolized Jim.  He was the picture of the word "class".

Since he had moved to the DC area we didn't see him often.  But, when we did he was so polite, so respectful and so well spoken, just a picture of what I would once want to be, and how I would want to carry myself.  

Our prayers are with you and the boys Catherine.

I first met Jim when his sister Joan married my brother Dean. I was 11 and Jim was 9. We became great friends. We spent a lot of time together when the Tomsheck and Stephany families were together. Jim was a lot of fun.  We didn’t see each other nearly as much as the years went by but always enjoyed catching up and sharing stories when we saw each other. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Jim was a great friend & mentor who was always there for others. We got to know Jim & Catherine during their time on the West Coast. He will be missed by so many of us! Our deepest condolences to his family.

To the Tomscheck family. I am so very sorry for your loss. I too could go on and on about what an honorable man he was. I worked for Mr. Tomscheck at Customs and Border Protection,Office of Internal Affairs. One of my favorite memories is when I brought my kids into the office one afternoon and before Pepi or I could catch him my son then about 7 years old marched right into his office and up to his desk to say hi. The smile on Mr. Tomsheck face instantly put me at ease and he stopped what he was working on to talk to my little guy. He was the sweetest and most compassionate man and was an absolute pleasure to work with. I pray for your comfort for the days forward.

I worked with Jim at the Omaha Police department when he started his law enforcement career. As written by several others Jim was a  very special person who cared about people and  was a first class law enforcement officer.  Jim was one of the finest  officers I have ever worked with during my 43 years in law enforcement. My condolences to his family and friends as we grieve the loss of such a wonder man, son, husband,  brother, father and friend to many. Until we meet again  reset in peace my friend.  Jack ODonnell

My tenure with the USSS and US Customs/CBP afforded me the opportunity to work with, learn from, and admire many law enforcement professionals. A/C Tomsheck clearly occupies a place at the top of the list.  I thank him, Commissioner Basham, and SAIC Triplett for collectively being responsible for the best 10 years of my 42-year federal career while assigned as a SSA in the Washington Field Office for IA/OPR.  

While it’s hard to call him Jim, out of my extreme respect for his position as A/C , he was always so in-tune with IA operations, I was always amazed that he would ask me detailed questions relating to my cases considering the huge caseload carried by the WFO.  And even more importantly, he would always express his appreciation for the efforts myself and all of the WFO agents put forth.   Jim’s ability to function as a top-notch manager and a  loyal servant to law enforcement and our great nation,  while remaining a colleague to the many people under his guidance and tutelage, I say thank you Sir, and rest in peace My Friend.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.  I pray your memories of Mr. Tomsheck will carry you through this difficult time.  I knew Mr. Tomsheck during his tenure as the CBP Internal Affairs Assistant Commissioner.  He was a man of integrity, character, conviction, and faith.  

I was several boxes below Mr. Tomsheck on the organizational chart, but he never treated me as if I were lesser or beneath him.  He always treated me with kindness, respect, and showed genuine interest in my well-being.  He always took time for me, which was a luxury in those early days of IA.  

He always shared stories and laughs.  He made people better versions of themselves.  He was a doer and led by example.  One day I walked into his office and found him crawling around on the floor looking for his Montblanc pen.  To be honest, I didn’t even know what a Montblanc pen was.  He told me the story of why it meant so much to him and why he appreciated it.   He didn’t give up on people, tasks, or things.  He was selfless in his leadership style and always touted the accomplishments of those around him.

He was a man of faith.  He was fiercely loyal.  He led great people through treacherous times.  We didn’t share the exact same beliefs, but shared a love for God and family.  He was never afraid to do the right thing or stand up for his beliefs - personal or professional, even when it was unpopular.

He will be missed and remembered as one of the good ones.  Be well, sir!  Until we meet again.

My deepest condolences to the family of James Tomsheck.  He was the Assistant Commissioner when I came to work in Internal Affairs.   As everyone mentioned,  he had integrity and treated everyone with respect.   He also had a great sense of humor and never forgot to laugh even during stressful times.  He made a lot of changes to improve the Internal Affairs office.  I really enjoyed working in IA during his tenure.  Rest in peace Mr. Tomsheck.

I met Jim in 1st grade at Saint Johns School in Omaha NE. We were very close friends thru grade school and high school. 

Jim was an outstanding person. Smart, funny, dependable and ready to help anyone. 

If we had more people like Jim the world would be a better - and comical - place.

I was profoundly saddened to hear of the passing of your brother/husband/father.  I worked for Mr. Tomsheck during his tenure as the CBP Internal Affairs Assistant Commissioner.  He was a man of honor and conviction and remained true to his convictions even when they were professionally unpopular.  One time, he returned from the college baseball World Series in Omaha with a tee shirt for my young son who was a big college sports fan.  Another time, years later when my mother in law passed away, I didn’t tell anyone at the office where or when her services would be held.  Yet, there he was in the church to pay his respects and offer my wife and family sympathies.  I will never forget his professional service to country or his personal gestures of kindness.  Please accept the condolences of my family to yours.

Heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the Tomscheck family.  Our career paths crossed, first in Detroit, MI (he-USSS, me-DEA) then again in the WDC area when I transitioned to the USSS. I fondly remember Jim as gracious, witty and thoughtful.  He mentored my entry into the Senior Executive Service, for which I have always been thankful of his time, his insight and professionalism.  Jim led by example, his character beyond reproach. I have been forever grateful for his example of leadership and mentorship.  Thank you Jim.

My sincere condolences to the family of James Tomscheck.  He was the AC when I began my tenure in IA and I remember his commitment and dedication to the people of IA.  He championed the cause and made sure his employees received the recognition deserved for the many challenging roles that fell within his purview.  Above that, I remember he was kind, fair and a person of integrity.  I’m truly saddened about his passing, rest in peace.  Prayers for the peace and comfort of his family.

To the family of Jim Tomsheck. I just received the sad news that he passed away on June 7. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. 

As an original member of CBP’s Credibility Assessment Division (CAD). I greatly appreciated his staunch defense of our program and of the polygraph profession. He was outspoken when our defenders were few. You are needed more than ever in CBP. 

Rest in Peace Mr. Tomsheck (Jim). Thank you for your leadership; your defense of CAD and the polygraph profession; and your friendship. I owe you a debt of gratitude. It was an honor to work for you and call you a friend.
