Jane Comeau Coony

Jane was born in Greenwich, Connecticut to Dr. Robert A. Comeau and Mrs. Dorothy (Kinney) Comeau. As a child, she spent many summers in Candlewood Lake with her family at her grandfather’s cottage. She famously swam across the lake, claiming in later years that it was significantly bigger when she was a girl. She also attended Greenwich Country Day School from which she matriculated to Marymount University in Arlington, VA.

Jane married Thomas Millard Coony in 1961 at the US Naval base in Kenitra, Morocco where they stayed for three years. Following their time in Morocco, the couple travelled through Europe for six months, a prelude to an international life due to Tom’s career in the US Foreign Service, with postings in Spain, Pakistan, Greece, Curacao and Belize.

Wherever Jane went, she delighted in meeting new people and engaging in a full range of local activities. An avid tennis player, she yielded her forehand on courts from Thessaloniki to Belize City and was usually active in club life. As a diplomat’s spouse, Jane enthusiastically and ably participated in a busy social life of hosting and attending a variety of social events, all while raising two sons in numerous countries around the world.

After her husband’s retirement, the couple bought a home in Castine, Maine where they spent more than 20 summers, enjoying wonderful times of tennis, golf, socializing, family and relaxation. They served as co-chairs of the Tennis Committee of the Castine Club for many years and were active in the club social life with many good friends in the community.

Jane was a constant reader and a dogged crossword puzzle maven. She doted on her beloved yellow Labrador Retriever, Saba.

Jane is survived by her sons, Thomas and Jonathan, two grandchildren, Elsa and Benjamin, and four nieces, Hilaire, Jennifer, Joanne and Linda. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Tom Coony.
