Julia Panourgia Clones passed away on February 7, 2022, at her home in Washington D.C. after a long illness. She was adventurous and curious throughout her long life; devoted to her family and friends, passionate about global equity and political reform, and loved both Greece and the United States, traveling back and forth between the two for decades. She was born on December 10, 1930, in Livadia, Greece. The third of three daughters of Efstathios and Ismene Panourgia, she witnessed the horrors of war first-hand and the impacts of the ethical and political commitments of her father, the town’s doctor. She travelled, on her own, to London in 1953, where she received her M.Sc. in Publica Finance from the London School of Economics. Late she attended the News School for Social Research in New York, as a doctoral candidate. She married Angelos Clones in 1960 in New York City, and moved to Washington DC soon afterwards, where she lived until her death. During the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, she and Angelos actively worked on help democracy return to Greece and removing the military Junta. She served as Director of the Office of Fire & Burn Hazards at the Economic Department of the Consumer Product Safety Commission during the early 1980’s, and then as Economic Minister and Permanent Representative to International Financial Institutions for the Embassy of Greece in the United States from 1981-1989. Afterwards she worked as a consultant for the World Bank and other international institutions promoting economic equity and economic development, especially in sub-Sahara Africa. Julia was an avid traveler, art lover, and incredibly resilient – it took cancer three tries to beat her. She was predeceased in 1974 by Anglos, who was her perfect match. She is survived by her daughter, Daphne son-in-law Eric; her son, Yanni and daughter-in-law Yvonne; her four grandchildren, Julia, Angela, Eileen and Zoe, as well as all those whose lives she touched.
