Laura “Lolly” Smith Stuart, 73, died November 7, 2019 at her home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She lost her battle with colon cancer after being diagnosed a year ago. She was surrounded by loving family and passed peacefully.
Laura Ann Smith was born September 2, 1946, in Winchester, TN to Dr. George Lafayette Smith and Theodora Anderson Smith. She grew up with three siblings and attended St. Mary’s Girls School in Sewanee, TN. Lolly attained a degree in Special and Elementary Education from Peabody College. She joined the Peace Corps and was stationed on the island of Fiji for three years, where she taught in the primary school and established a special education program. During this time she traveled abroad extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. She returned to the US and worked as a teacher in Atlanta GA, where she met her husband, Scott Stuart. She attained a Masters of Education from Georgia State. She and Scott joined a teachers’ exchange program and moved to Venezuela to teach at Colegio Internacional Caracas. In Venezuela, she made life-long friends who remained close through all of her life. She also gave birth to her son Danton. She spent three years teaching in Caracas before moving back to states for good.
Lolly and Scott moved to Roanoke, VA and welcomed their second child, a daughter, Sara. Shortly after, they moved to Maryland (Seabrook, Severna Park, and Chevy Chase) where she raised her family while teaching another 25 years. After retiring, she continued to serve through volunteering at Luther Place church, NPR radio affiliate WAMU, and local elementary schools. Lolly and Scott recently celebrated their 44rd anniversary with family and many friends.
Lolly had a passion for travel and experiencing cultures. She continued this passion through her life and visited over 35 countries. She was an excellent cook, and enjoyed hosting delicious meals for family, friends, and even strangers coming through town. She was a supremely thoughtful and accepting person. She supported many family and friends during their life challenges, by visiting, cooking for them, and providing compassionate care.
Lolly is preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother George Lafayette Smith. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Scott Howard Stuart; siblings Thomas Anderson Smith and Rachel Smith O’Neill; son, Danton David Stuart; daughter, Sara Smith Stuart; and three grandchildren, Simon, Mea, and Logan.
