Mary Dan (Patellis) Koroulakis, 82 years old, originally of Washington, D.C. and recent resident of McLean, Virginia passed away on June 17, 2015. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Emanuel John Koroulakis, loving mother of Ioanna Firippis and the late Irene Koroulakis, mother-in-law of her beloved Pantelis Firippis, and proud and loving grandmother to Maria Elena and Irene Angelica Firippis. Sister to Nomikos Patellis, Nicholas Patellis, Androniki Alahouzos and the late Pantelis Patellis. She is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends, including her life-long and dear friend Nina Kaplanides.
Mary was the daughter of the late Demosthenes and Irene Patellis who immigrated to the United States from Kalymnos, Greece in 1930. Mary was born in Clairton, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1932 and she grew up in the small steel mill town. Mary broke traditional boundaries and attended a secretarial and business school. In 1948, Mary met Emanuel J. Koroulakis and the two fell deeply in love and were married on August 31, 1952. After their marriage, Mary and Emanuel moved to Washington, D.C. The couple had two lovely daughters, Irene and Ioanna. Emanuel opened several successful restaurants including the landmark Washington, DC establishments of Gusti's Villa, Alfio’s La Trattoria and Alfio's La Bella Vista.
Mary and Emanuel shared a love for travel. In addition to their home in Washington, DC, they enjoyed spending their winter months at their home Highland Beach, Florida and summers in homes in Athens, Greece and Ocean City, Maryland. Mary and Emanuel helped many in need; during the early years of their marriage, they helped several relatives and friends immigrate from Greece to the United States. Mary and Emanuel were also devoted to their beloved Greek Orthodox Church community in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.
Mary will always be known for her kind heart and sense of humor. She was loved truly by many and will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May her memory be eternal.
