Mrs. Bush lived a life committed to supporting our public institutions, and engaging in her community professionally and personally. Moving to the Washington, DC region from Loudon County, VA in 1958, Mrs. Bush began organizing volunteers at the Montgomery County Democratic headquarters.
This was only the beginning of Mrs. Bush’s public involvement that would include working for the Democratic National Committee as Executive Director of Women’s Activities under United Democrats for Humphrey in the 1960’s, serving as the President of the American Council for the Arts in the 1970’s, and representing the Library of Congress as Public Affairs Officer in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Other notable experiences included serving as the Public Affairs Director for the National Portrait Gallery, as a Public Affairs Specialist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and serving on the press desk at numerous Democratic National Conferences and Conventions.
Mrs. Bush never shied away from an opportunity to volunteer in support of the Democratic Party, the arts, or her community. Upon her retirement from professional service, Mrs. Bush served as President of the Volunteer Service Corps of Sibley Memorial Hospital. She was a devoted and active member of St. Paul’s Parish in Washington, DC.
Mrs. Bush’s active public service was second only to her family life. While pursuing her career in Washington, DC, she raised four children. The family grew to include thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She also cared for her mother, Mrs. Mayme Ferguson of Frederick, MD, until her death in 2004.
In 2005, Mrs. Bush moved to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, Virginia. She spent the last eleven years spending time with her family in the Charlottesville area.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Mr. Monroe Bush Jr, and is survived by her brother, Mr. James H. Ferguson of Alexandria, Virginia; and four children, Mr. Bruce Bush of Frederick, MD, Rev. Dr. Andrew Bush of Royersford, PA, Mr. Douglas Bush of Scottsville, VA, and Mrs. Ann Cooper of Charlottesville, VA.
Relatives and Friends are invited to a memorial service at Saint Paul's Parish, 2430 K St NW, Washington, DC 20037 on Saturday December 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge at www.westmistercanterbury.org.
