

Robert Edwards Hunter ( May 1940-January 2026) passed away on 18 January 2026. He was born in Cambridge Massachusetts and was educated at the Wesleyan University and the London School of Economics and Political Science. He held a doctorate of philosophy from the LSE. He was an author, scholar and teacher of foreign policy and international relations, especially as it pertained to America's engagement in the world with a special focus on transatlantic relations and NATO . His engagement with foreign policy began at an early age. At age 24 he served at the Lyndon Johnson administration, working as special assistant to Douglas Cater., who was special assistant to President Johnson after pursuing graduate studies in London and lecturing and also working and at the International Institute of Strategic Studies and publishing several Adelphi papers. He returned to the US and began a career of working for democratic administrations (Carter 1977-1981) , and the Clinton administration 1993-1998 as the US Ambassador to NATO.
In addition, he served as foreign policy adviser to Senator Edward M. Kennedy and advised democratic presidential candidates and other democratic politicians, including Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, Ed Musky, and many others.
He was a true American patriot and a champion of a global system under US leadership based on the rule of law and concern for the fate of the less fortunate people and countries. Until the very end through his writings and commentary he championed a more peaceful world under the US leadership. His passing will be felt keenly by those interested in intelligent debate on key issues facing the US and the world.
Robert is survived by his wife Dr. Shireen Hunter.
A funeral service will be held on March 10 at 11 a.m. at the Christ Church Georgetown at 3116 O Street N.W.
