In sports there is the term 'player's coach'. Well, Steve was a 'musician's club owner'. The template for the kind of boss musicians like to work for.  And a genuine fan of genuine music.

One of the kindest persons anywhere. Steve sustained a blues scene almost single-handedly in DC.

I entered The Zoo Bar as a stranger and left as a friend because Steve was such a nice upstanding guy. Had some good conversations with him and always enjoyed visiting his place. In fact going to the Zoo Bar would not have been as big a deal if Steve  wasn't there. A perfect fit Steve and his line of work. Great atmosphere and great music and great host.
Oh and I loved playing harmonica there.Also I use a video taken of me working out with the Big Boy Little band at The Zoo Bar on my site tallrichard.com

For 46 years you were a friend a loving soul one of the gentlest kindest people I've ever known I will always share wonderful memories with my Stevie I will miss your quick wit and naughty sense of humor love you buddy until we meet again

I played at the Zoo Bar quite a bit in the late '90s and Steve was one of the most supportive club owners I've ever worked with. He also poured a great Black & Tan. He'll be missed by many people.

Rest in peace Steve. Thank you for all you've done to the blues community. You will be sorely missed here.

Steve was a wonderful man and ran a great place. We are new to the neighborhood and are grateful to have known him.

Steve McKinney was a wonderful, funny, warm and caring man. He will be missed dearly. Thank you, Steve, for everything.

Steve exemplified the ancient and highly honorable role of host, providing a place where musicians and those who just listened could enjoy each other's company and blues in a cozy warm shared living room, with hot and cold running food and beer. He loved the music, and he liked his patrons and they liked him, very much. I feel his loss greatly.

I haven't lived in the neighborhood in some time, but for as long as I did I always had a second home with cool live blues, a cold frosty mug of Foggy Bottom straight from the hands of our friend Steve, whom I will miss, and I know I'm not alone. God rest you and grant comfort and peace to your family.

Steve was a gentleman and a very good friend. He was also a great neighbor three decades ago, when we met regularly.
My children and I will miss him very much.

Thank you for saving me when I needed to be saved and for forgiving me when I needed to be forgave. A wonderful man you were.

Steve McKinney opened his restaurant and his big kind heart to me by letting me be a part of the Zoo Bar and it's wonderful patrons.I am forever grateful for the laughs and the love. Rest in Peace Dear one, until we see you again.

I have been playing the blues in DC since 1976 and I have never met a bar owner like Steve. He loved the music and the community and was one of the most straight up guys I've ever known.  I'm proud to have been able to call him friend.  May he rest in peace.  I'm sure he'll be running the best blues scene in heaven.

Steve was one of a kind. What a kind-hearted guy!  Always just nice to be around over all of these years!  He has been a part of my life since the very beginning and there is a hole now!  He was part of the Spring Valley Gang!!!  We will miss you Steve!  Love to your family!
