Susanne (Sue) Stanley, 76, died peacefully at her home of 38 years in Washington, DC on March 27, 2023. Her devoted husband of almost 50 years, David, was by her side. She lived courageously for 13 years with Myelofibrosis, a rare and incurable blood cancer.
In addition to David she is survived by her son Jonathan (Jon) Stanley and daughter-in-law Eran Stanley of Nashville, TN, her daughter Katherine (Katie) Stanley and son-in-law Peter (Pete) Dorsey of Washington, DC, and four grandchildren: Lucy (18), Jack (15), Timothy (Timmy) (3), and Ella Susanne (1), as well as her sister Carol Carlson of St. Louis, MO, her brother-in-law Richard Stanley and sister-in-law Courtenay Stanley of Charlottesville, VA, her sister-in-law Anne Stanley of Lancaster, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins.
Sue was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Charles Kenneth and Sue Dyer. She graduated from Mary Baldwin College in 1968, and maintained the circle of dear friends that she made there for the rest of her life. Following graduation she started as a trainee at IBM, beginning a long career in programming where she saw the evolution of computers from punch cards and vacuum tubes. Her weekends were often spent on and around David’s sailboat, where she was at times a reluctant crew member but always an enthusiastic hostess for their guests. After retiring from IBM she and David traveled the world on trips to Southern Africa, Israel, Argentina, India, New Zealand, and many locations in between. She was an active church member throughout her life, primarily at All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, where she sang in the choir and helped to lead the Women of All Saints.
Sue fiercely loved her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren, sharing the joys of their lives and making each feel special. Her constant smile, genuine interest in others, fun-loving spirit, and her ability to make everyone feel included expanded her circle of friends over the years, and she will be sorely missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 in the afternoon on April 28 at All Saints, 3 Chevy Chase Circle, Chevy Chase, MD 20815. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Sue’s memory to Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital (Johns Hopkins) or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
