
His older brother, Eugene F. Mathews, died in 1984, at age 59.
Tom entered Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, Michigan, in 1943 and was awarded a Basselin Scholarship to Catholic University of America in 1947. He continued his studies for the priesthood in 1948 at the North American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.
In 1950, he left studying for the priesthood to study pre-med. at the University of Notre Dame and was graduated cum laude with a B.S. in 1952.
Entered Georgetown University Medical School in 1952. Was graduated with an M.D. in 1956.
Internship at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Michigan, 1956-1957.
Residency in psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC, 1957-60.
Two years on active duty with the Naval Reserve as Base Psychiatrist at the Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia. Retired with the rank of Lt. Commander.
Private psychiatry practice from 1962 to 2011.
Appointed to the Georgetown University Clinical Faculty in 1962. Retired as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry in 2011.
A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. (Note that Distinguished in part of the title.)
He served on the Washington Board of Young Concert Artists for over 25 years and served as President of the Friends of the Corcoran Gallery of Art for three years.
Donations from Dr. Mathews’ art collection have been given to the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, among others.
Dr. Mathews was a member of the Cosmos Club since 1994.
As an amateur pianist and organist, he gave several public performances on the organ of the Church of the Epiphany.
An avid photographer, Dr. Matthews had works published in several photographic publications and exhibited at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He is survived by his longtime friend and travel companion, Jeanne Mitchler-Fiks; five nieces: Jeanne Connally, Ann Porter, Barbara Ellena, Laura Mathews, Patricia Fuhlendorph, and a nephew, Thomas Mathews, all of Denver, Colorado.
