Of Washington, D.C. died on Friday, January 25, 2013 after a short illness bravely borne. She was attended by two solicitous, but unsolicited, social workers funded by Medicare. This was a source of some irritation to Mrs. Greenwald in the moments preceding her death; otherwise she lived a long and satisfactory life.
Mrs. Greenwald was the widow of Ambassador Joseph A. Greenwald. She served with her husband, and left her own distinctive mark, at diplomatic posts in Geneva, London, Paris and Brussels and, after his retirement from the Foreign Service, in Tokyo where Mr. Greenwald headed the Bendix Corporation's Japan subsidiary.
Mrs. Greenwald will be much missed by her sons, John of Washington and Bruce of New York, and by her daughter Jane of San Francisco, as well as by five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and longtime friends. By strength of character, a formidable intelligence, quickness of wit and generosity of spirit, she was at the center of the circles within which she moved.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Joseph Gawler's Sons, LLC funeral home, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20016, (202) 966-6400. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice .
