

William Potter Schofield, Jr. passed away at his home in Washington, DC on March 7, 2023. Bill was born on March 30, 1947, in New York City, New York to William & Elsie Schofield, Sr., and was an only child. Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Schofield. They were married 45 years when Pat passed away February 2, 2022.
Bill graduated from Randolph Macon Military Academy, University of Virginia and University of Virginia Law School, he graduated with honors from each school. After Law School he passed the State Bar of Georgia. Prior to Law School, he served in the Army in Vietnam, retiring from the Army as a Major. He and Pat then moved to Washington, DC and started the next phase of their life.
Bill joined the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer serving in Brazil, Jamaica, Slovakia, Eastern Europe and Afghanistan, as well as, Washington, DC. Pat accompanied Bill on his overseas assignments in the State Department.
Bill was a man of deep faith and a true leader. He also loved going to the Washington Nationals baseball games, in addition he loved dogs, fishing, traveling and the theatre. He was known to all as a gracious, kind and humble human being.
Bill is survived by many cousins; Pat’s sister, DeNell Storms and her husband Edward from Dawson Springs, KY, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 11:00 am at his church where he was an active member and there will be a reception to follow in the Great Hall of his church: National United Methodist Church, Metropolitan Memorial Campus, 3401 Nebraska Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
Bill will be Inurned at a later date (to be determined) at Arlington National Cemetery.
