Norma was born on Main Street in Washingtonville, NY on Valentine’s Day 1922 to Clara (Felter) Hookey and Daniel Thompson Hookey. Her early years in Washingtonville found her as the star on top of the Christmas Tree next to Moffat Library at the annual tree lighting ceremony and singing for programs in the library. Gifted with a beautiful singing voice, she sang solos in school, in church at the Washingtonville Presbyterian Church and the Blooming Grove United Church of Christ. After high school graduation, Norma graduated from the Spenserian Secretarial School. She became a supervisor at Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY and an employee at WGNY in Newburgh until her marriage to Theron Andrews in 1951. She and Theron led a full life in Connecticut. She was active in the Woodmont United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was a soloist. For a while, she worked for the Mayflower Trucking Company in Milford, CT as an accountant. Norma had a heart of gold, helping family and friends whenever she could. Her abilities and energy were recognized and appreciated. She was very active in the Masonic Orders of the Eastern Star where she served as Grand Matron of Stratford Court, Connecticut State Grand Matron and Grand soloist for both the local chapter and state; and the Amaranth where she served as Grand Matron and Grand Soloist. From her very early years until her last days Norma loved animals and had many cats and 3 purebred poodles. Again through her love, energy and ability she earned her dogs blue ribbons and their International Papers for obedience. Late in life Norma followed a lifelong nursing dream and graduated from Milford, CT. hospital first in her class as a nurse’s aide. Though that career was short lived it was the one that fulfilled her the most. Norma was predeceased by her husband Theron of 41 years, her son Mark David of one day, her special dog Gigi, her 5 siblings: Charles Hookey, Alice Hookey (Buchino) Moffat, A. Muriel Hookey, Clara Hookey (Gerow) Johnson, Donald Hookey, niece Anita (Gerow) Reinke, and nephew Robert Butler. She is survived by the nieces and nephews she loved “like her own”: Hal Gerow (Cindy), Ken Johnson (Beverly), Melanie Hookey Parker, Elsa Gerow Cameron (Phil), Donna Hookey Zeidler (Karl), Stephen Hookey (Sandra), Cindy Hookey Allen (Scott), Jeff Hookey (Lexi) and grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews. Norma will be remembered by us for her singing, her quick wit, loving heart and MANY intricate knitted, crocheted, and tatted gifts. She passed quietly on New Years Day in Connecticut after a short illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Washingtonville Cemetery or Blooming Grove United Church of Christ. There will be a graveside service on Friday 11am January 6, 2017 at the Washingtonville Cemetery, 34 North Street, Washingtonville, NY at 11:00AM.
