

Waterville—Donald Franklin White, 92, of Vassalboro, died Tuesday April 16, at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville after a long illness. He was born in Liberty Maine on August 6, 1920 the son of Carrol and Hazel (Sherman) White.
Don was educated in local schools. He served in the Navy from 1942 – 1945 during WWII. He was a member of the Vassalboro United Methodist Church, a life member of the Owls Head Transportation Museum, a member of the Heart of Maine Square Dancers and the Waterville & Winslow VFW. He was also a Mason, Vassalboro lodge # 54. Don worked many years for the Keyes Fibre Co. as head mechanic where he retired in 1994. He was also known as a gentlemens farmer, had multiple vegetable and flower gardens, raised various farm animals, at one point included peacocks into the mix. Don loved to tinker and could get any piece of machinery running again. In his retirement years Don and his wife Christine found themselves traveling to different parts of the US as well as Europe.
He got great pleasure in decorating his homestead for Christmas and Halloween which, on occasion, got the attention of local newspapers. He will also be remembered as a great story teller and often spoke for the Vassalboro Friendly Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Christine (Smith) White of 49 years, 10 brothers and sisters, Howard White, Louise Crosby, Pauline Taber, Richard White, Carrol White, Floyd White, Harlan White, Clara White, Stanley White, & Hazel Choate, and a dear companion Geraldine Loisel
He is survived by 5 children, Donald White and wife Charlotte of Bucksport, Sharon White of Vassalboro, Blaine and wife Mary of Vassalboro, Beverly White and husband Stephen Miller of Scarborough and Jeffrey White and his companion Laurie Daigel of Vassalboro, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, a brother Abbott White of Vassalboro, a sister Barbara Letourneau of CT, & several nieces and nephews.
The family would also like to give a very special thank you to his niece Debbie Nelson.
Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. April 20, 2013 at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville. Funeral service will be held Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the Vassalboro United Methodist Church, 614 Main Street, Vassalboro with a luncheon to follow after the service . Private committal for the family will be held in Village Cemetery, Vassalboro.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes that donations be made to the Vassalboro United Methodist Church, 614 Main Street, Vassalboro, ME 04989.
