Born and raised in Detroit, Lorraine attended Lutheran High School and was a member of its first graduating class in 1947. After school she went to work for the S.S. Kresge Co. at their downtown headquarters. Outside of work she was a volunteer for the local chapter of the USO. One of her USO assignments was that of being a hostess at a dance held at Selfridge Air Base for the enlisted men. This is where she met the love of her life, Bill (William) Miller. They married in 1952 and after Bill’s Air Force duty was complete, they bought a home and settled in Redford Twp. She became a homemaker and her and Bill happily raised their four children. In 1967 she went back to work for her former employer, now known as the Kmart Corporation. Then came the unexpected death of her husband in 1976. With the children mostly grown, she devoted herself to her career going on to become the first women to join the Management team at the Central Regional Office. She moved with the company to their Canton offices and then went on to the International Headquarters in Troy. After 21 years of service she retired in 1988. She then took on one of her favorite roles – a full time Grandmother. This led her to move out to Howell in 2000 to be closer to the youngest grandchildren. Unfortunately this is also when her health began to decline. With strength, determination and faith she survived many medical challenges. Finally, in May having decided she could no longer live independently she chose to move into the Loving Care Assisted Living home in Brownstown that is owned and operated by her grandson Robert and his wife Brenda Ice. It is here she spent her final night – knowing she was in a comfortable place where she was loved and cared for.
