AVIS DE DÉCÈS

William John Belanger

30 juillet 194721 mars 2020

William John Belanger passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2020. He was 72.

Bill, as he was known, was born on July 30, 1947 to William Belanger and Ella Libby in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Family and a sense of community were of utmost importance to Bill. Making a home in Wayne, Michigan, he worked for K Mart in at both store level and within its corporation for over 50 years, rising through the ranks of the company. Rising through the ranks gave Bill the opportunity to travel to onsite locations throughout the country, where he was well known and respected by all. He was so good at what he did, Bill was dubbed, “The Great One” by one of his bosses.

Bill was a lifelong family man and had two sons. So often, he would recount how proud and close he was to them. Bill saw both sons graduate from college and get married.

In addition to his work and family, Bill had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid guitar player and Chet Atkins was one of his idols. He also enjoyed golf and bowling; local sports and NASCAR. He was something of a news junkie according to those who knew him best, and he enjoyed several television programs and was a very frequent moviegoer.

Bill is preceded in death by both his parents and his brother, David Belanger.

He is survived by both of those loving sons, William (Kari) Belanger and Michael (Michelle) Belanger, two grandsons, Owen and Eli Belanger, to whom he was affectionately known as “Dollar Bill”; sisters Alice Valley, Jeanie Woodhall, Phyllis Smith, as well as nieces and nephews and loving dog “in laws” Boo and Bambi.

Bill was a great friend, a good neighbor and a father figure to so many in his life. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he has touched.

A celebration of Bill Belanger’s life will be held at a later date.

My good friend Bill. It’s so hard to find the right words because I still can’t accept that he is gone. He was a very loyal person and I had the privilege of working alongside Bill for many years. He was the person who always promoted those that he felt had potential. He believed in me and promoted me on the job, many times.

We had always good times on the job be it in NewYork, Chicago, always in Detroit. Once while driving around Chicago, Bill said I’ll follow you Gary. After having to get off the expressway as we had to loop around three times and an hour later he passed me up and called me and said “ Gary I just can’t get off the expressway one more time, you work it out and I’ll see you back at the hotel. “

Another time we were rushing out of a restaurant and Bill had to stop and help an old couple into there car. They were slipping on the ice and Bill helped the old man get his wife in the driver’s seat then he said come on “Pops” now I’ll help you in on the other side. He saw me looking on and I said Bill you don’t even know them and he said “ Come on now Gary, ya know you’re gonna get old one day too. “. This was the beautiful, fun nature of Bill. He never knew a stranger.

Bill I don’t know, I just thought you’d always be there my buddy. I will miss you so much but always remember the lessons you taught me. Not just work related but life and living.

Go with God “ my friend” rest in final peace knowing many people love you and will miss you forever.

Your friend,
Gary

To Bill’s family,
We heard of Bill‘s passing today when we participated in the online mass at St. Mary’s Church of Wayne. Even though we did not know Bill personally, we knew him as a fellow parishioner. We often saw him at mass on Sundays with his son Michael. Many many years ago I coached his son, William, in Baseball.
Chris and I wanted to let you know how deeply sorry we are for your loss. In this time of unprecedented loss and grief it is so difficult to not be able to celebrate his life as you would normally do in a funeral and mass at St. Mary’s. We wanted you to know that we will lift up your family in prayer and that we pray for peace and comfort for all of you. We look forward to a future time when you can celebrate his life together.
Sincerely, John & Chris Zech,

Bill was a good friend of mine - we first met when he was Apparel Mgr at Kmart 4027 in November of 1973. He not only worked for me as my Apparel Special Projects Regional Mgr back when I was a Kmart Regional VP he has my close advisor. Anytime I needed a store ready for a visit from the President or Chairman of the Board - Bill would get it ready in Top Notch fashion. No one cared more about Kmart than William. His 50 year career was amazing. Rest In Peace my old dear friend

I worked with Bill for many years at Kmart. He was the "Great One", he could work circles around everyone. He always had a good joke and could make you smile. Bill liked to address anyone younger than him as "kid". Everyone he worked with was named "kid", makes me smile. I'm sure Bill will be looking down from Heaven and enjoy every moment of watching his family grow. Rest in peace Great One.🙏🙏🙏

Uncle Bill was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever had the pleasure of having in my life. I remember the day he walked me down the isle. I was so nervous that I was going to trip and fall in front of everybody because I’m so graceful. He looked at me and told me how proud he was to be walking me down the isle and said don’t worry I won’t let you fall. At that moment I knew he would catch me if I fell and all the nervousness just went away. I love and cherish every single minute we spent together and I will miss him until we meet again. I love you always Uncle Bill❤️
