

Ann was born on September 21,1939 in Vesuvius, VA. She was the daughter of the late Wallace Hamilton and Margaret Mayo Hamilton, and her stepfather Walter Hamilton.
After graduating from Wilson Memorial High School in 1957, she attended Woodrow Wilson Technical Center, worked as a secretary at the University of Virginia Library, and at Westinghouse. Ann was employed by T.A. Loving Company from 1959- 1992 as the assistant to John Loving. She was instrumental with the crew's construction of numerous bridges on I-81 from the Shenandoah Valley to Blacksburg, VA, as well as several bridges along the Outer Banks of NC. She was also successful in sales for World Book Encyclopedia, winning many awards.
On July 28, 1961, Ann married her late husband of 61 years, Gerald “Jerry” Layne, who passed on August 17 , 2022. Ann and Jerry resided in the home they designed on Kingsbury Drive in Waynesboro, VA from 1968 - 2022. They resided at the Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton, VA from July 2022 until their passing.
Ann enjoyed traveling to 46 states, most of the Canadian provinces, as well as Western Europe; taking care of her family; bird watching; and enjoying activities with her ladies' groups at Memorial Baptist Church in Staunton, VA.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ann was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Hamilton, and her sister, Iris Gordon, both formerly of Waynesboro, VA.
Ann is survived by her daughters, Vonda Layne Tabor Donlen and her husband John, of McGaheysville, VA, and Breeta "Bree" Layne Heizer Hollish and her husband, Doug, of Troutville, VA; grandchildren, Drew Tabor, Lauren Tabor, Bryce Heizer and Brooke Heizer; and her brother, Clay Hamilton of Fishersville, VA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A celebration of Ann's life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton, VA. Family and friends may visit anytime from 2 pm until 4 pm in the chapel on the second floor.
Ann requested all memorial contributions be made to the Staunton Augusta Church Relief Association (SACRA) at 25 North Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
