Charles Wilford “Charlie” Collins, 99, of Waynesboro passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020 at his home. Born February 1, 1921 in Huttonsville, WV he was a son of the late Forest George and Maude Virginia (Boggs) Collins. Charlie was part of the Civil Conservation Corps in Thorwood West Virginia in 1938. He served his country in the Army Air Corps in the Aleutians Islands from 1943-1945. Charlie moved to Waynesboro in 1940 and his first job was at the Lee Plant earning $15 per week. He then took a job at Crompton Shenandoah Company where he worked for 42 faithful years. While working at Crompton, he also worked at Electrolux for 38 years. His stories and history of his childhood in Huttonsville, WV were enjoyed by many people. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ethel (Wamsley) Collins; four brothers, Carl, Boggs, Lee and Harold Collins; and one sister, Mary Miller. Survivors include one sister, Adelaide Kesterson; two children, Larry Charles Collins and wife, Nancy of Waynesboro and Janet Bean and husband, Harvey of Waynesboro; four grandchildren, Brian Collins and wife, Casey, Jessica Conner and husband, Ryan, Aiden Bean and Donica Sluss and husband, Michael; four great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Collins, Joshua McElroy, Kaylee Sluss and Colton Sluss. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro with Rev. Karen Allamon officiating. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, those attending the service will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home. The family would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah and the Department of Veterans for their gracious help over the last several months.
