

Clara was born on September 24, 1923 in Waynesboro, the oldest child of Alonza Rice and Jane Williams Terrell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Austin L. Hoy; sisters; Mary T. Taylor, Hattie T. Leeth; sons-in-laws, Waldo E. Cupp and The Rev. B.C. Akers.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lee Akers; a brother, Arthur R. “Sonny” Terrell (Shirley); grandchildren Sherrie C. Burns (Edward), David E. Cupp (Susan), James R. Morrison (Danielle), Carla M. Henderson (Matt); great-grandchildren, Matthew and Grayson Burns, Kelsey Cupp, Drake, Mackenzie, and Sophie Morrison, Kendrick Morrison, Logan Henderson (Anna), and Abby Henderson.
She also leaves several special nieces, nephews and a special friend, Debbie Henderson.
“Mama Hoy" as she was known by family and friends, retired from DuPont in Waynesboro after 37 years of service, and subsequently enjoyed many adventures with the“Happy Travelers” retiree group. She enjoyed competitive bowling, spending Sunday afternoons at the barn watching her grandchildren riding horses and watching the cardinals at her birdfeeder. She found her greatest joy in cooking enormous Sunday dinners and welcoming any and all who showed up to her table. Her cornbread, meringue pies and coconut cakes were legendary.
A graveside celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery, followed by a gathering of family and friends at the home of her daughter, Mary Lee Akers, 1129 Alston Court, Waynesboro.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Retreat in Fishersville for their kindness and care in her final weeks.
