Born July 6, 1927 in New York City, NY, he was the son of Samuel Dillard Laughlin and Julia Chappell Laughlin. His family soon made their home in Richmond, VA, and in 1938 relocated to Arlington, VA where he attended Washington and Lee High School.
He went on to graduate from the University of Virginia with a BS in Commerce where he was a member of the Virginia Glee Club, the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, the Cavalier Daily, the baseball team, the debate team, the Student Party, the Raven Society, and Delta Sigma Rho. He continued his education and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1952.
Dillard then served in the U.S. Army JAG Corps during the Korean War. Shortly after returning to VA, he married Jane May Thompson of Washington, D.C., and enjoyed a 59 year marriage until her passing in September, 2014.
Dillard and Jane made their home in Arlington, VA for 33 years, where they were blessed with four wonderful children. He enjoyed a long and successful career with the firm of Phillips, Kendrick, Gerhart, and Ayler.
As his spiritual journey was an integral part of his life, he was a loyal long time member of Cherrydale United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and long time member of Washington Golf and Country Club, conveniently located across the street from their charming home on Rock Spring Rd., where he provided the opportunity for his children to also develop a love of golf.
In 1968, while on a fishing trip to the Northern Neck of Virginia, Dillard discovered what would become his family's cherished summer cottage on the Potomac River at “Sandy Point” in Kinsale, VA, where loved ones from near and far still gather for fellowship and fun. After his retirement in 1988, he and Jane relocated to Springfield Beach, a community right around the corner from Sandy Point. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, engaging with his neighbors, and teaching his grandchildren the joys of river life. In 2006, they moved to Summit Square Retirement Community to be near their daughter.
In addition to his parents, and his wife, Jane; Dillard was recently predeceased by his only daughter, Elizabeth Derrick Laughlin.
