He was the son of the late Herbert Lee and Lacy Pearl (Truslow) Ferguson.

James was a carpenter by trade.

Survivors include two daughters, Jessica Keys and husband, Arthur, and Jennifer Thacker and husband, Timmy; brother, Charles Herbert and wife, Reba; sisters, Maxine Shearer and husband, Richard, Linda Breeden and husband, Roy, Darlene Ferguson, and Tina Ferguson; and grandchildren, Nathaniel, Bentley, Bella, Bryson, Tamara, Timothy, Laney, and Landson.

Following cremation a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
