Born July 30, 1935 in Covington, VA, she was the daughter of the late Ballard F. and Effie Virginia (Lilley) Wade.
Affectionately known to many as “G.G.” (Grandma Genius), Jean lovingly and tenderly formed a strong bond with each of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and just about anyone she came across. She enjoyed spending quality time with each of her loved ones playing a game of cards, attending sporting events, or sharing meals together. With her vivacious and adventurous spirit, she was always only a phone call or an invitation away. Nowhere was too far to travel to support those she cared about, visit a friend, or have a new adventure.
Jean was a bold witness to her faith. As a young adolescent, she was raised attending Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church where she later sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. In later years, she became a member of SherLynd Baptist Church where she was involved with serving her church community in different roles.
She was a sports enthusiast and a diehard Washington Redskins fan, and was employed for many years by RFK Stadium and FedEx Field. As an excellent cook, she often worked in food service. She and her sister-in-law, Ginny Wade ran the concession stand at Sherando Lake for 18 years where she gained many life-long friends that she calls her Sherando Family. She loved the outdoors and from Memorial Day to Labor Day her family was at Sherando Lake camping and fishing. G.G. will be remembered by her family and friends as someone who was consistently giving, thoughtful, and loving.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Lee Ramey; son, Robert Wagner; grandson, Preston Ramey; brothers, Robert Britt and Ballard Wade “Buddy”, Jr.; and sister, Sharon Wilson.
Survivors include her son, Scott Ramey and wife, Rodera of Staunton; daughters, Renee Anderson and husband, Dean of Henderson, NC, Christi Phillips of Lyndhurst, and Donajean Hanger and husband, Richard of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Matthew Ramey (Felicia), Kirsten Ramey, Michaela Swearingen (Zach), Jon Anderson (Karen), Katie Jones (Steven), Megan Krieg (Shawn), Madison Phillips, Colby Phillips, Rachel Cundiff (Ross), Ricky Hanger (Hayley), Christopher Wagner, Daniel Wagner, Andrew Wagner, and Elizabeth Hoskins (Brandon); 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Wade of Waynesboro; best friend, Carolyn Newman of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at SherLynd Baptist Church, 20 Winterview Lane, Lyndhurst. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Allen George officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Matthew Ramey, Jon Anderson, Steven Jones, Shawn Krieg, Colby Phillips, Ross Cundiff, Ricky Hanger, and Zach Swearingen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SherLynd Baptist Church, Building Fund, 20 Winterview Lane, Lyndhurst, VA 22952.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Brookdale Staunton and Legacy Hospice for their love and care of Jean over the last several months.
