Born July 7, 1949 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Virginia Layne.
Upon graduating in 1967 from Waynesboro High School, he studied economics at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Larry was a grocery buyer for Safeway, worked in marketing and sales at Haddon House Food Products and retired from Kraft Foods, Inc.
Since his youth Larry enjoyed playing drums, often joining jam sessions in a local park, and forming a band with his high school classmates. He continued to pursue this past time on his treasured Sonar drum kit. In 1963, he won the Waynesboro Soap Box Derby and represented the area in the world championship in Akron, OH. An avid fisherman from an early age, he continued this pursuit as an adult, piloting his boat along the Chesapeake Bay. He enjoyed hunting, and golfed often enough to obtain a low handicap.
He leaves behind his companion and caregiver, April; as well as numerous cousins, friends, and fishing buddies.
Following cremation, a graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro with Pastor David Vaughan officiating. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks memorial contributions be made to Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church, 688 Highland Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980, where the Layne family was charter members.
