Martha Neal Shumate, of Augusta County, VA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 4, 2026, at the age of 64. She was lovingly known as “Yeehaw,” a nickname given to her by her niece over 20 years ago that perfectly captured her fun-loving, spirited personality.
Martha was born in Waynesboro, VA, to Thomas Shumate, Sr., and Rebecca Shumate on May 3, 1961. She graduated from Stuarts Draft High School in 1979 and then continued her education at Ferrum College.
A true cowgirl at heart, she was happiest around horses and the outdoors. After college, she followed that passion to Kentucky, where she worked on a thoroughbred ranch caring for horses and living out her dream. Some of her other work adventures included working as a veterinary technician, in the family Surveying business, at Vector, and Cadence.
Martha lived a life marked by humor, perseverance, pranking friends and family, and a profound love for animals. From a young age, Martha was rarely without a horse, dog, or cat by her side, and caring for animals remained one of the greatest joys of her life. She was well-traveled and a history enthusiast, with a particular interest in World War II.
For the past five years, Martha fought cancer with remarkable strength. She never stopped laughing and smiling; her positive outlook brought light to every room. Her strength, resilience, humor, and love for life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew and cared for her. She wished most to be remembered for her love and compassion for animals.
Martha is survived by her father, sister, brother, nieces, nephews: Thomas Shumate, Sr. of Waynesboro, VA; Penny Reid Shumate (Ryan) of Waynesboro, VA; Thomas Shumate, Jr. (Sharon) of Fishersville, VA; Austin Shumate (Paulina), U.S. Air Force; Leara Shumate (Melissa), U.S Army; Rafe Shumate, U.S. Air Force; and Thomas Darensbourg, at Stuarts Draft High School.
A celebration of life service, officiated by Fred Holbrook, will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, 30 Tinkling Spring Drive, Fishersville, VA. A reception will be held following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the SPCA.
The family of Martha Neal Shumate wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to her caring medical team at Augusta Health Cancer Center, with a special thank you to her palliative care specialist, Amanda Wilson.
