
Born December 21, 1934 in Greenville, he was a son of the late Charles T. and Myrtle (Lawhorne) Painter.
Prior to retirement, Phillip worked as a butcher and meat department manager at Shop and Save Grocery Store on West Beverly in Staunton and later at the Staunton Walmart. He was a member of Mt. Joy Presbyterian Church, Raphine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Manley Painter on June 16, 2022; brothers, Elwood F. Painter, Raymond T. Painter, and L. Douglas Painter; and sisters, Dorothy P. Weeks, Madeline Harris and Gladys Harris.
Survivors include his step-daughter, Carolyn C. Cox and husband, James W. Cox, Jr. of Staunton; step-son, Bruce A. Craun and wife, Dana J. Craun of Fishersville; grandchildren, Jeffrey A. Cox, Leslie A. Adkins, James W. Cox III, Tiffany Kiser, Stacey Warr, and Jamie Craun; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Following cremation, there will be a private family graveside service held at a later date.
