He was born April 9, 1933 in Franklin Township, Greene County, a son of the late Harvey and Florence Orndorff Higgins, where he had lived most all of his life.
John was a 1952 graduate of Waynesburg High School, where he was a 1952 Pennsylvania State Wrestling Champion. After graduation he entered the United States Marine Corps and carried the discipline and determination from his service that defined his life.
He was a hard-working businessman, blunt, direct, and cut from his own cloth. His drive never faded. He never stopped pushing himself to ensure his family was respected, provided for, and taken care of. He worked for Penn Lines, West Penn Power, PennDOT, and Greene County Maintenance before founding Higgins Hauling in the 1960’s. The family business he built continues today, a legacy he took great pride in.
John loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren deeply and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Whether through his work, his words, or his presence, John made an impact and was never one to leave things unsaid.
He was a member of Fairall United Methodist Church, the Elks, Moose, VFW and Grange lodges.
Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Higgins of Fairmont, WV; his son, John H. (Judi) Higgins of Waynesburg; two grandchildren, JD (Julianne) Higgins and Jordan (Tim) Stefanizzi; two great grandchildren, Reagan and Lakyn Stefanizzi; his longtime companion, Martha Todorov; his former wife, Marjorie Hargett; and his sister, Josephine Blair of Orlando, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, William G. Higgins; and his sister, Ruth Ann Blair.
Private arrangements have been entrusted to the Behm Funeral Home, 182 W. High St., Waynesburg, PA 15370. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date at Fairall United Methodist Church. Condolences may be expressed online at www.behmfh.com.
