Betty Jean Arrington Plemmons, age 93, passed away in her home on January 11, 2025. Betty was born to the late George Howard and Thelma Kelly Smith Arrington in Waynesville, NC on April 2, 1931. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 67 years, Albert Plemmons, her sisters Juanita Skinner and Lois Arrington, and her brothers Joel, Edward, and Bobby Gene Arrington.
Betty lived a full life of adventure, residing across several cities and states, traveling internationally with her husband, and creatively engaging with her community. She spent her days working for Bell Telephone Company and being a devoted mother before opening a needlework shop, The Beehive, in Brevard, NC. The Beehive was a fiber arts hub of Downtown Brevard for ten years.
Throughout her life, Betty remained passionate about serving her neighbors. She was an active participant at First Baptist Church as well as a member of Transylvania County Arts Council, Department 56, NC Extension, and Mountain Laurel Investment Club. In her free time, she enjoyed hosting events, decorating for the holidays, and playing tennis. Betty, affectionately known as “Nana” or “Nan” by her grandchildren, loved spending time with family, particularly on beach trips to “Nan’s place.”
While we will miss Betty’s sweet smile and tender heart, we rejoice that she has now been reunited with loved ones previously passed.
Betty is survived by her son, Scott Plemmons (Sandy) of Mooresville, her daughter Kimberly Williams (Hooper) of Brevard, and her sisters Freida Haney and Sandy Shelton (Ed) of Waynesville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Matthew Plemmons (Hannah) of Charlotte, NC; Kyle Plemmons of Taylors, SC; Meaghan Oliver (Trey) of Indian Trail, NC; Ryan Rooker of Colorado Springs, CO; Landon Rooker (Fran) of Leavenworth, KS; Allie Wilder (Noah) of Chicago, IL; Olin Williams (Arin) of Kodak, TN; and Lei Williams of Brevard, NC in addition to seven great grandchildren, 17 nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law, Reid Plemmons (Anna Jean) of Brevard, NC.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1pm on Friday, January 17 at Garrett Funeral Home in Waynesville with Dr. Randy C. Barton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private family graveside service will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Children’s Center of Transylvania County at 95 South Johnson Street Brevard, NC 28712.
