Claudia Hazel Knipe, 70, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2024, after courageously facing a decline in health. Born as a twin on January 7, 1954, at Fort Hood, Texas, Claudia’s life was shaped by her father’s military service, which afforded her a unique upbringing enriched by travel across the United States and Europe. Her adventurous spirit blossomed as she attended the University of Maryland in Munich, Germany, where she experienced the thrill of the 1972 Olympic Games firsthand.
After returning stateside, Claudia earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Western Carolina University. She began her career serving others with the Haywood County Department of Social Services and went on to work in nursing home care, ultimately finishing her career with the North Carolina State Division of Child Development. There, she contributed significantly to ensuring high standards in daycare centers, dedicated to the care and well-being of young children.
A proud alumna of Tuscola High School, Claudia and her twin sister, Cynthia, represented their school at Girls’ State in Raleigh, sparking a lifelong interest in government and politics. This experience fostered a keen awareness of civic duty that stayed with her throughout her life.
Claudia had a unique way of connecting with her nieces and nephews, who cherished her quick wit, humor, and warm spirit. Known for her love of reading, insightful discussions, and pecan cheese balls, she also enjoyed cheering on her beloved Kansas City Chiefs. Her kindness, generosity, and devotion to her faith as a lifelong Methodist were constants in her life, extending to those in need and organizations she valued.
Claudia’s dedication was formally recognized when she was awarded North Carolina’s highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, acknowledging her significant contributions to her community and the state. Her work with daycare establishments across Western North Carolina exemplified her deep compassion and commitment to the welfare of children.
Preceded in death by her parents, George and Hazel Knipe, Claudia’s legacy lives on through her sisters, Karen Lederer (Mike), Joyce Geer (John), Joan Walker (Phil), and Cynthia Bird (Bill). She will be forever remembered by her nieces and nephews: Lesley Geer Quick, Jennifer Geer Brockington, Melanie Walker Batenchuk, Jonathan Walker, Michael Bird, and David Bird, all of whom will carry forward her spirit of kindness and strength.
The family would like to thank her some others who were important to her: Her other “sisters”, Margaret Brown and Louise Caldwell who would help her one to two days a week and were good company and friends. Jesse Brown would also help her with her yard work and other tasks and Claudia loved him for his compassion and kindness to her.
Claudia was a compassionate soul, a devoted friend, and a beloved family member. Her warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Life service will be held at Garrett Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 10, with the Reverend Keith Turman officiating, preceded by a family visitation at 1:00 pm.
