Joe Wallace Powell, Sr. “Haywood County Native” Joe Wallace Powell, Sr., 85, of Waynesville, NC passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Haywood County on October 25, 1930 to the late Emory Otis, Sr. and Lela Ensley Powell. Joe will be remembered most for his kindness, generosity, love of children and his sense of humor but most of all his love for his wife and children. He was owner of ARM Trucking and ARM Racing. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Emory Otis, Jr., James, and John Powell; and sisters, Doris Powell Adamek and Jeanne Powell Vance. Left to cherish his memory is his wife Amy Powell and children, Linda Powell Smith, Joe Wallace Powell, Jr. and wife Vickie, Janice Powell, Gina Powell Ownbey, Greg Powell and wife Shanda, Christopher Lee Taylor and wife Olivia, Roger Powell, Madeline Powell; brothers, Bruce Powell and George Powell and wife Judy; sisters, Elizabeth Powell Anagnost and Emy Powell Christian; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The family will receive friends on Wednesday prior to the service from 1 to 3 PM at the funeral home. Entombment will be held at the garden mausoleum of Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Broyhill Baptist Children’s Home, 111 Sneed Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
