

He was born to the late Robert A Short, Sr. and Doris (James) Foster, June 1, 1953, in Leland, Mississippi. In 1971, Fly graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, South Carolina. He began a lucrative career as a land surveyor on gas and oil projects for various pipeline firms before joining Centex-Rooney as its in-house surveyor working on numerous projects including the Marriott's Frenchman's Cove in St.Thomas, Virgin Islands, the Orlando International Airport, and the Parabolic Arch at Epcot Center in Disney World.
Flyrod is survived by his beloved partner of 28 years, Jennifer Lewis Drabek; siblings Sherrea Steen Chadwin (Steven), of Conshohocken, PA; Maura Short DeReuil (Roby), of Palm Beach Shores, FLA, David Jones Short (Maria), of Milledgeville, GA; daughter Rebecca Ann Short (Sierra) of Porter, TX, and stepdaughter Amy Rose Guyton (Charles) of Starkville, MS. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, 13 grandnieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Arlo.
A resident of the Haywood and Jackson County, NC area for 28 years, Fly enjoyed the awe and splendor of the Smoky Mountains. He loved dogs and fostering puppies, was a certified diver, and loved sailing. He was a passionate guitarist and a walking encyclopedia of music knowledge who especially enjoyed any opportunity to make connections through music. Fly leaves behind a lifetime of happy and beautiful memories.
