On April 23, William passed away and into the loving arms of his Mother, Daddy, and God. Bill was a proud former Eagle Scout, graduate of Webster Groves High School and Texas A&M Commerce University. He served in the United States Army in the 34th Signal Corp. While serving in Germany, he met and eventually married the love of his life, Ursula Luchter.
After marrying on August 8, 1964, Ursula and Bill moved back to St. Louis, Mo and began their lives together. A year later, their son Peter was born, followed four years later by their daughter Diane. Bill worked in sales for several years, first with Texaco and then General Mills, where he was named salesman of the year in 1972. In 1976, while now living in Lee's Summit, Mo, his long standing love of flying inspired him to first get his private pilots license and then his instructors certificate. Soon he bought Wilson Aviation, a Cessna Flight school based in Kansas City, KS and had as many as 7 planes available for instruction and pleasure purposes. After closing the school in 1984, Ursula, Bill, and the family moved back to the St. Louis area where Bill worked for 10 years as an aviation underwriting specialist and after his retirement began to work as a security officer at 6 Flags of St. Louis, which he did for 16 years.
Bill had a great love of his pets and animals, history, traveling, nature, and a continual thirst for knowledge. He also loved people and never met a person he did not like. He had a lot of friends that truly loved him and the affections shown to him were always returned. This included the wonderful Drs. and staff at Washington Mercy Hospital's Oncology Dept., whose kindness and caring will never be forgotten.
Bill loved Ursula, Peter, Diane, grandson William Songer, sister Sue Thomas, nephews Richard (Lisa) and Bill Thomas, great nephew, Richard Thomas IV, and great niece, Tyler Thomas, more than anything. He was our family's Rock of Gibraltar and he will be forever loved and missed by all!!
Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday May 4, at Gerber Chapel, 23 W. Lockwood, Webster Groves. If desired memorial contributions may be left to Mercy Health Foundation/Oncology Services Fund, 901 E. Fifth St., Washington, MO 63090.
