As very young children we met our cousin and her six siblings on the farm with the chickens in the yard, the pigs in the pen and the whiff of cotton from the nearby crops. We watched as our relatives communicated using sign language in silence and a mix of familiar English, accented with Cajin French, as they warmly welcomed us into their home and daily lives.
Later, as adults, our visits would find fewer relatives as aging took its toll, but there was Cousin Irene steadfastly stationed in her kitchen. With her quick wit and caring questions about the rest of the family she continued to deliver more good food from her kitchen than we, struggling with our various diets of "city food", could possibly eat, but dare not refuse.
Toward the end, as all of her siblings had passed, our visits were mostly over the telephone in conversation about the "how is the family?" and her regrets about not being able to navigate in her kitchen.
Cousin Irene will be missed in presence but not in fond memories!
Cousins: Lorraine Longnion Arnold, Lloyd Longnion, Jackson Longnion.
