Aldo “Pops” “Nonno” DeMarco, 91, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, in West Des Moines, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Born on June 9, 1934, in Fanna, Italy, Aldo’s life was a testament to resilience, determination, and the enduring strength of family. At the age of 24, he made the courageous decision to leave his homeland and immigrate to the United States with nothing but a single change of clothes and the hope for a better future. His beloved wife, Luciana DeMarco, joined him three months later in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their journey together was one of shared dreams and unwavering commitment.
After less than a year in Indianapolis, Aldo moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he and Luciana welcomed their three sons. During this time, Aldo worked tirelessly in the tile and terrazzo trade. Though the work was demanding, he remained steadfast in his goal of one day owning his own business.
That opportunity came when Aldo learned that Des Moines Marble and Mantel was seeking a buyer. For an entire year, he commuted from Omaha to Des Moines while negotiating the purchase of the company. In 1968, he moved his family to Des Moines and entered into partnership with his brother-in-law. Through years of dedication and hard work, Aldo helped build a legacy that would eventually be passed down to two of his sons and a nephew—ensuring that Des Moines Marble and Mantel remained a family-owned business for generations to come.
Aldo was known for his stubborn determination and deep pride in his heritage. His vivid stories of life in the old country will be cherished and retold by those who knew him best. He found great joy in spending time with his family and took particular pleasure in growing vegetables—and crafting homemade sausage and grappa.
He is survived by his three sons: Luigi (Donna) DeMarco of Independence, MO; Mario (Laura) DeMarco; of Des Moines, IA, and Rick (Melonie) DeMarco of West Des Moines, IA. He also leaves behind grandsons Antonio (Jenny) DeMarco, Vincent (Erin) DeMarco, Victor (Rose) DeMarco—all of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Dino DeMarco of Des Moines; granddaughters Alexandra (Andrew) Miller, of Des Moines, Madeline (Robert) Dumas of West Des Moines, Leah DeMarco of Kansas City, MO, and Matilda DeMarco of Des Moines; as well as five great-grandchildren.
Aldo was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Luciana DeMarco.
