Alvin “Al” Meyer, 91, of the Lighthouse Assisted Living Home, Highlands Ranch, Colorado and formerly of West Des Moines, died Sunday, April 12, 2015 after a brief illness. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Chapel with a private family burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Al was born January 18, 1924 in Bassett, Iowa, the sixth and youngest son of Carl John Edward and Katherine Moeller Meyer and graduated from Charles City High School. He came to Des Moines to attend classes at A.I.B. before enlisting in the Army, where he served as a Flight engineer and attained the rank of Corporal. He married Paula Marie Schmidtke, the love of his life, on February 22, 1947, in Humboldt, Iowa. Al graduated from Drake University in 1950, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He worked for Crescent Chevrolet for the next 38 years, earning membership in Chevrolet Motor Division’s Legion of Leaders for 35 years, often as the Des Moines Zone top salesman.
Survivors include his two sons, Daniel (Julie) Meyer of Highlands Ranch, CO and James (Chris) Meyer of Golden, CO; granddaughter, Kathryn (Brian) Reager of Highlands Ranch, CO; and grandsons, Eric (Bethany) Meyer of Longmont, CO and Michael (Katie) Meyer of Denver, CO; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brother-in-laws, Albert (Karen) Schmidtke of Humboldt, IA and Jim Sulek of Kirkland, WA; and sister-in-laws, Margaret Meyer of Charles City, IA and Anita Sehr of Iowa City, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and five brothers, Benjamin, Walt, Willis, Carl, and Clarence Meyer.
